Psycho-oncology
GOALS OF PSYCHO-ONCOLOGY
The aims of AORTIC Psycho-oncology SIG in line with International Psycho-oncology Society (IPOS) are to foster training, encourage psychosocial principles and a humanistic approach in cancer care. It also seeks to stimulate research and develop training so psychosocial care may be integrated with all clinical oncologic specialties for optimal patient care. The main goal of Psycho-Oncology is to provide an infrastructure to deliver better emotional care to patients and their families who are dealing with cancer.
Specifically however, the objectives of psycho-oncology include:
- Enhance the consideration and incorporation of the psychological, social, cultural, spiritual aspects of care across the cancer care continuum in Africa.
- Foster excellence in education, research and clinical care in the specialty of psycho-oncology in Africa.
- Provide a framework for offering psychosocial care in all settings where cancer patients can be found through multidisciplinary approach in Africa.
- To act as Patients advocate so as to enhance the quality of life of patients and their families from time of diagnosis through treatment, survivorship, and palliative care in Africa.
- To provide psychosocial treatment to cancer patients and their caregivers in African countries.
- To provide training ground to further the work of Psycho-Oncology in Africa.
- To create community awareness in the area of Psycho-Oncology in Africa.
- To develop guidelines for the practice of Psycho-Oncology in Africa.
